SO I have been debating getting a draco for possible sbr use for the last few weeks.
Before the SBR route if I have a mfg gunsmith transfer it in and AOW it the total cost outside of the smithing is 5 bucks?
But if I form 1 it then it is 200 for the AOW and 200 for the sbr?

I'm a little confused about what you are asking ....

If you want to own an AOW:

––You can file a Form 1, pay the $200 "making" tax, and build it yourself.

––You can send your host firearm to an FFL/SOT licensed 07/02 manufacturer. He can turn it into an AOW and register it; you pay him for the gunsmithing work required, then he files a Form 4 back to you, and you pay a $5 transfer tax.

But if you were SBRing it, why bother with the AOW?

If you're going off of the fact that you can't add a VFG to a handgun unless it's an AOW, SBRing it clears up that issue.

I know the sbr clears the vfg up, but 3-6 months for approval is a long time.
Am considering going the aow while I wait for the abr approva.

That is where I was a bit confused.

The application process is exactly the same for AOWs and SBRs –– same form same documentation, only difference is that you check the "$5" box instead of the "$200" box.

So if you go for an AOW, it will take exactly as long as it would for the SBR. Going AOW first, and then SBR next for the same firearm, will take you twice as long as going for the SBR in the first place.

... and waste $200 if you do it yourself, or $5+ gunsmithing fees if an FFL/SOT does it..... plus ANOTHER 3-6 month wait.

OK I did not know the AOW was the same waiting time frame.

Now that has been cleared up guess it is going SBR.
