I think I have a pretty good handle on NFA stuff, but I would like to get some more input.
First, if I transfer a handgun (keltec plr16) to a Class 2 SOT, can they attach a VFG for me and do the required paperwork to make this an AOW and transfer it back to me for the $5 stamp?

Second, if yes to above question; how much would be a typical charge for such an item?

Third, am I obligated to keep the new AOW in the same configuration for the life of the gun? What I mean to say is, if I decide I want a different VFG at a later date, can I personally swap it? or does that need to be done by a Class 2 SOT as well?

And forth, since I am in effect sending the gun to a Class 2 SOT for the purposes of doing something that I can do on a form 1 and $200 am I not committing tax evasion by doing the above scenario?

Thanks for any advice,

Chris

PS: please reserve judgement on the merits of the PLR16. I don't really care.

Second, if yes to above question; how much would be a typical charge for such an item? Whatever they want -- $0 to $195; anything over that, it'd be cheaper for you to do your own Form 1. Since they have the paperwork of first filing the Form 2 to register it, then filing the Form 4 to transfer it back to you, I would guess at somewhere between $50 and $100.

Third, am I obligated to keep the new AOW in the same configuration for the life of the gun? What I mean to say is, if I decide I want a different VFG at a later date, can I personally swap it? or does that need to be done by a Class 2 SOT as well? You can swap it for another VFG yourself.

And forth, since I am in effect sending the gun to a Class 2 SOT for the purposes of doing something that I can do on a form 1 and $200 am I not committing tax evasion by doing the above scenario? It is completely legal under federal law, AFAIK.

Thanks for any advice,

Chris

Are you going the aow route just to save some money? You could register it as a sbr and add a foregrip and then get a stock at a later date.

no place to put a stock on a PLR. No this is more about reducing OAL.  Think with sling on back and eotech/micro aimpint, it would make a great trunk gun.  MP5K like.

I was thinking about doing the same thing with a B&T TP9 Pistol.  My local shop is about to become a Class II / SOT and they have the B&T pistol in stock.  I have a few SBR's already and have no desire to put a stock on this pistol but really want a vert grip on it.  With a single point sling and Micro Aimpoint it will make one bad ass blaster.

Correct me if im wrong but isnt it still $200 to register an AOW but only $5 to transfer it? If thats the case than youll still have to pay the $200 to have the grip attached. Might as well SBR it, im sure you could get creative and find a way to attach a stock to it.

A Class 2 SOT can register an AOW on a Form 2 ($0) instead of a Form 1 ($200).  He can then transfer it to your dealer on a Form 3 ($0) or to you on a Form 4 ($5).
