Always wanted a bolt action, single shot 50BMG.  Looking at getting one of the above soon.  My dealer will cut me the same % discount on each one.  Which should I choose and why?

Don't really care about resale value, b/c I'll keep it forever.  Just wondering what the real differences are...

Both are excellent choices and long range accuracy between the two is very similar.  I've had extensive experience competing against shooters with both guns at FCSA 1000-yard matches.  Their both really solid and competitive for long range use.

The choice between the AR-50 and Barrett M99 is a pretty simple one depending upon your mission.  If you plan to field with a 50 BMG, meaning Hunt, Hike, or Shoot any tactical type games or repel hoardes of foreign attackers, the Barrett M99 i superior due to its much lighter weight and shorter overall length due to the bullpup design.  If you want a more match adaptable gun or a gun just for shooting at the range, the AR-50 is superior due to the stock design, heavier weight, and resultant lighter recoil.

One other minor concern is that Barrett must install replacement barrels for an M99.  It's pressed into place.  AR-50's use normal screw-in barrels so any competent gun smith can install a new barrel.  This really isn't a big deal because barrels will probably last you 4000 rounds or so before they start to loose significant accuracy.

Lastly, the AR-50 accepts normal Remington 700 triggers so the trigger it comes with is easy to adjust yourself or you can replace it with a jewel trigger.  The M99 comes with a Barrett proprietary trigger which can be improved but cannot be readily replaced with off the shelf triggers like an R700 unit.

Either gun is top notch.  You just need to decide if you'll be taking it very far from the truck.

Also, I strongly suggest if you go with the Barrett M99 to stick with the 32" barrel version.  The others fall short in long ranger performance due to the lower velocities you can obtain and the lighter bullets you'll need to use.  The AR-50 only comes in a 31" barrel which is also fine.  I wouldn't consider the 25 or 29" M99s for 90% of uses although if you can only get a 29", it's vastly superior to a 25".

I frequently combat MZBs in my neck of the woods.  Probably will go with the M99, which is the way I was leaning anyway.  Looks like the price difference is $500-$800 or so.

Any other opinions?

I went with the AR-50 as my final choice, I've had other .50's (Steyr, Barrett M82, and just nixed the idea of getting an M95 because the store that had it were pricks, but never a 99) and couldn't be happier, I shot a 99 and a Viper and both were great guns (I actually liked the Viper just a hair more than the Barrett) but the recoil felt more stout on both than the AR-50 (most likely due to their significantly lighter weight). I didn't care about the weight because honestly, how often are you going to hump your .50 very far?

Either way you go you'll be happy, just stock up on ammo and shoot the hell out of your pick.
