I have an opportunity to stock up on 4 lbs. of rifle powder at a very good price via LGS. I want to start loading .223 probably 55gr FMJ's.

I have PM'd several members on this board concerning the best single powder among the choices (which aren't many) and the overwhelming 1st rec. among the available powders was H335 (store does not stock Ramshot, CFE223, or IMR-XBR)

However, I forgot to mention that one of the powders available is Alliant AR Comp. How does this stack up against H335?

ETA: Powder measure is a Hornady LNL

I've only been reloading rifle for just a few short years so I don't have the vast experience that others here do. That being said, I've got 24lbs of AR-Comp and just 3lbs of H335. I prefer how the AR-Comp meters over the H335, even though the H335 meters very well. It shoots accurate in my rifles and I have been able to get it cheaply over the last two years.

The down side is load data for it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as prevalent as what you can find for H335.

I gave AR comp a go a yr or 2 ago under 55gr v/z max bullets.

Groups were nothing to write home about, so I moved on.

Now for range blasting/plinking, I guess I would consider it but only if it were cheaper or more available then H335.

My son's AR15 loves H335 with 52 Vmax & 55 varmint nightmares.  IMR 8202XBR shot well too but not as well.   I think AR Comp may work better with heavier bullets as it was suppose to be a more temp insensitive RL15.  I tried AR Comp & TAC in this rifle but didn't see enough to pursue further with H335 working so well.

I find AR comp too slow for the 55's and too fast for 77's.  It has produced fairly accurate loads with 69 gr smk's across multiple rifles.  YMMV

I have only shot one load with AR Comp. With 69 gr MK's.

Groups were not bad, just not as good as CFE 223 for me.

I say give it a shot.

I don't know if you're looking for plinking ammo or something more along the lines for precision.  However, H335 serves both for me in 55gr ammo.  Like someone mentioned above...load data is very easy to find for almost any round using that powder.

I like H335 for those reasons, but for me it's also cheaper in the end because I use less per round than most other powders.  I use 25gr of H335 for 55gr bullets when plinking.  I'll use a little more for precision.  But I get more ammo made in one bottle of H335 than most other powders.  Generally, I use it for up to 62gr bullets and accuracy is still good even for my plinking ammo.

I have been tempted to use AR Comp before but never have.

Plinking ammo to be shot out of my first AR, a currently as yet unfinished very low budget build.

Based on the replies I'll go with H335 but if the store gets in any CFE I'll buy it instead.

CFE223 is good stuff, too.  I use it for heavier grain bullets.  Dryflash swears by it!  It's a good powder.

However, if budget is your concern, you'll use more of it per round.

High power guys like 25.0 grains of H335 and a 52-55 grain bullet. I've loaded and shot thousands of these. They shoot knots.
