[ARCHIVED THREAD] - AUG Gas Piston Spring......WHY?

This has perplexed me from day one...I have to be missing something.

AUG piston setup....not much different than an M14 or an AR-18. All have a piston within a cylinder. The AR-180 and the M14 ( and a dozen others ) drive the piston back home with the op rod. Why does the AUG need a spring? The op rod works pretty much the same way.....

so.........WHY the piston spring?

Anyone ever run an AUG without it?

They wanted to ensure it would be in the forward position when removing/installing the barrel assembly.
As long as that happened, it'd be fine without it.

What's more interesting is why the barrels come threaded in M13x1 despite the fact that the barrel is made here.

Because that's how Steyr wants them threaded.

I'm glad they finally made 1:7 twist barrels.

Same reason most Glocks are threaded metric even though they're made here. Same with P226 factory barrels.

Exactly. It's necessary due to the necessary rotation of the barrel for installation and removal. The SCAR gas system, which is AUG inspired does not require a piston spring because barrel removal and installation is coaxial to to the length of the receiver.

More and more pistols are having a threaded option all the time. Most of the major polymer guns have one option or another. Aluminum guns such as Sigs and Berettas, too. Wasn't that long ago that you had to jump through a few hoops to get a can ready ( or device ready ) barrel.....not so much anymore. It's getting more straightforward every day.
