Now, is that what is called the 81/2 "?  Hope so.  Where does the front sling swivel go on this variation?

That is in deed the 8.5" rail.  For the forward sling mount, it attaches to the rail itself allowing you to adjust how the rifle balances to suit your needs.

Does it attach via a clamp onto the rails or is there a tapped hole into the rail?  If the latter, exactly where?  In any case I am glad I chose this length.  It really looks great.

It attaches to the rail with a swivel off to the side and can be positioned anywhere on the rail.  I'll look for a pic.
