I got bit by the Bullpup bug and plan on getting a Tavor when it comes out and I'm also interested in a Aug or clone. The E4 seems like a good rifle and not bad for about $1k for one without optic.
So whats the difference between the AXR and E4?

Pros and Cons for each? Anyone own Both?

Whats on the must have list for the MSAR E4?

E4 for $1000?  You might be looking at the STG-556 Gen 4, which takes AUG/MSAR mags.  Lowest price I've seen on the E4 (which takes AR mags) is $1300.

Similarities between E4/AXR:

  • Take any number of M16/AR style mags including MSAR's own XM-30 translucent mags.

  • (Obvious) They are clones of the original AUG.

E4 pros:

  • Available lefty bolt.  AXR uses a Austrian-MFG Steyr NATO stock, which doesn't have a left-handed ejection port.

  • Approximately 20 linear feet of rail space (this may be an exaggeration.  I don't know that anyone has actually measured.)  The AXR is available with only a few rail options, which may be enough depending on how much junk you want to hang off your rifle.

  • Bolt release, so you can easily close the bolt on an empty mag.  On the AXR, you either have to remove the mag or insert a loaded mag.

  • Available factory optic that closely resembles the original AUG optic.

  • Choice of three colors for the stock and plastic bits: Green, black, and tan.  The AXR is only really available in black.

  • Price.  You can get STG that takes AUG mags for around $1000, one that takes AR mags for $1300.  The AXR starts out at around $2100.

  • Awesome customer service.  Not knocking TPD, but they're kind of a one-man-band right now, and Kent's interest in selling new rifles seems to be waning.

AXR pros:

  • Built to be interchangeable with Steyr spec parts, and uses many Steyr parts to begin with.  So if TPD goes bust, you'll be able to get a replacement anything from SAI, in theory.

  • CNC machined receiver.  The difference is largely cosmetic (never heard of an original AUG or MSAR receiver breaking) but this is important to some.

  • Side magazine release in addition to classic AUG rear release.  I'm able to perform mag changes quicker using the side release.

  • Uniqueness.  That I know of, there are only around 140 AXR's.  I think MSAR has already sold more STG's than Steyr originally imported into the country.

I have an AXR, but I'm thinking pretty hard about either a STG-556 Gen 4 or STG-556 E4.

Thanks for the help! I know were i noticed that the AXR starts off very pricey. I wasnt Aware that the AXR did not have a left hand option. Should have figured since there was no LH bolt on thier website.

Another option to keep in mind is that you can get an AUG A3 SA (new, Sabre Defence mfg) from PJ's with the same Steyr NATO stock that the AXR has for around $2000.  The side mag release is TPD's customization to the stock, you don't get it with the regular Steyr NATO stock.
