| I have a brand new un-fired Remington 870. I bought a bunch of A-Zoom Snap Caps so I can dry fire the shit out of this thing as I sit on my couch with a beer without the fear of shooting a hole in the wall, until I can get to the range. I have noticed the snap caps are getting chewed to shit. Should I be concerned? Normal? |

Your 870 can be dry fired all day long without caps.
But if you want to practice your pump and reloads you can use the cheaper plastic dummy shells. The orange plastic ones run about a quarter a piece. Yes, they all get chewed up by pin strikes and extraction/ejection. Forget about the trigger on your shotgun and work on your swing. |

A shotgun is for moving targets. Usually small moving targets like squirrels, ducks and human heads. Work on your mount, swing and reloads if you're so inclined. Sport or combat, the trigger gets slapped. |

What's the config on your 870?
I think you can run anything over 20" barrel up at the PGCSSC in Greenbelt. It's not a combat course by any stretch but Trap, Skeet and Clays are all great fun. Learn some lead and follow through too, it all works on human targets as well. If you can hit a 6" disc flying through the air at 40 mph then you can hit a bad guy on the run no problem. |

Quoted: Just an anecdote, but after I busted the firing pin in my Winchester Defender (many yarn ago), I became a believer in Snap-Caps.Your 870 can be dry fired all day long without caps. I know Winchester and Remington are different animals, but I run Snap-Caps in my 870 because I'm shy of busting another. I'm not an expert, just a guy. |

It can't hurt but most people dry-fire to work on their trigger and hold, which isn't a big issue for shotgunners. People with expensive O/U's often use them just to relieve the springs and/or keep the chambers oiled up. Some of the inertial guns don't work without a shell in the chamber. |
