I had another thread asking about using rimfire for High Power competition here. Now "wrangler" has given me a reason for another rifle. I liked his suggestions but they're on the expensive side for used rifles of unknown origin. The thought of a diligent Boy Scout jamming a jointed cleaning rod after every range session comes to mind.

Anyway, what do you think of the Savage FVT MKII

My dad just bought one for exactly that purpose.

In short, great rifle. Just understand that it is a savage rimfire, meaning that although it will be (and is) a nail driver, build quality will not be as good as others.

The length of pull on the stock is a little short for most, magazines are somewhat irritating if you are shooting legs that require a mag change.

Furthermore, you will probably want to tighten and loctite the front sight screws. My dad figured he would break his FVT in shooting Appleseed, and the whole front sight assembly just came loose and fell out of the dovetail...

All that being said, buy one, some swivels, a turner sling, and a buttpad. You'll be in business.

Another good option is a used Mossberg 44us from the CMP. $175 before shipping and tax. Mine is set to show up tomorrow.
