| Loading for a Rem 700 .308 . I use Win LR mainly, and have used cci 200 a little bit. Im trying to look for some FGM 210m and cci br2. Will changing to the match primers help my loads at all if everything else stays the same? Is this one of these " you wont know unless you load them up and try" sort of deals? I have some new FC brass on the way, and im going to order a box of lapua brass also. Right now my FC brass is on its 3rd or 4th firing. |

Link above has one primer study that appears to have drawn some conclusions. Many variables involved including what the rifle prefers. From my experience you should be fine with either FGM or CCI BR primers. |

Agree with the other posters. German's other articles are worth reading too by the way.
If your rig isn't a BR rig, you can still determine if the primer change is significant in your rig. You just shouldn't draw conclusions about primers in general based on such a test, however that doesn't mean you shouldn't test primer changes in your rig. Some primer batches were worse than others, even within the same type and brand. It didn't take a ballistics test rig to find this at first, but one was used to confirm and finalize the complaint. If you have the inclination and your background wasn't science, you may want to read up on testing and design of experiment articles with a ballistics cross reference. You don't need a PhD in math and statistics to get good results. Learning how to tell if your primer change is really a change at all isn't too difficult. If you have access to some distance and a chronograph, you will just need a day with calm winds and you can sort it out. Some target graphical analysis software can be helpful, but all you really need is a decent ruler or cheap caliper. |
