I have recently received my stamp for my 10.5 inch 5.56 SBR. But now I would like to add a caliber so I can use it for a 9mm 10.5 inch upper as well. I figure I might as well add 6.8 while I am at it just in case I ever want to go that route. I have read that all I need to do is write a letter to the ATF telling them I wish to do this. But I would like to get it right the first time... What should the letter say and who (specifically) should I send it to? Do I need to add anything else other than this?: Dear Mr/Mrs ATF agent, I wish to add 9mm and 6.8 SPC to my registered SBR ser# xxx-1234. Thanks, Kellevil I would appreciate any advice. Thanks |
So I can put a 9mm upper on and go shoot it and that's legal as long as I intend it to be primarily a 5.56mm rifle? |
Correct. your rifle can only have one caliber. You can make temp. changes with no problem. If it's a permanent change then you have to request it. Put your 9mm/ .22lr/ whatever cal. upper on and go shoot. When you get home put your 5.56 upper back on and it's back in it's original config. If you sell your 5.56 upper and replace it with something else then you have to request a official change. |
Your lower could be marked "paintball" and it wouldn't matter.... Those are manufacturers markings. Your AR lower can handle many different calibers but some people are anal and want the multi. |

It should be made abundantly clear that there is no requirement to notify NFA Branch of ANY change to the caliber, barrel length or OAL of your registered SBR. Notifying them of permanent changes is merely a courtesy so they may maintain a clean and accurate Registry. You are free to change calibers and barrel length to your heart's content. The caliber and barrel length listed on your approved Form 1 is merely the caliber and barrel length at the time it was made. Form 1 is for "Making" not for the continued possession and use in perpetuity. Once it's made, there is no longer any federal jurisdiction attached to what you do to the SBR thereafter as it pertains to configuration changes. |
