I have a Ram Line on my tanker M-1 that I wanted to shorten a little bit. Anyone have any ideas for a buttplate? Guess I could get on midway and start taking down dimensions and then eyeballing it..

How much shorter? Only an inch or so. Tanker has a 16 inch barrel, ie. no front handguard and gas cylinder flush with rear handguard. The recoil is less when shooting squared off, ie. parallel with firing line, and the shortened length of pull would make this style more comfortable. Or so I think. |

I have thought of this as well, don't really care for the poofy pad. possibly cut some aluminum stock to fit? I don't suspect that there's any manufactured part that will conform to the Ram Line..... Probably no manufactured part. I could do what someone did with a cav arms, ie. remove buttpad, trim, then fit a universal buttpad from brownells or midway, and drill holes in it to correspond with existing holes in stock. If I were really talented I'd take a real garand/carbine buttplate and fit it, ie. dremel, blast and park, but I'm not set up for it. |

Something like that would probably work. I wanted to go with a universal buttplate simply because I could drill out holes to match where the ramline guides are in the stock. I guess I do need to spend some time on midway and brownells. Still need to decide how much I want to chop off the stock itself... |

I cut down a RamLine Garand stock as well. I just reground the original buttpad to match, but I have the jigs and sander for that. The stock is about an inch shorter than where I started. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v487/CTinNV/DSC00342.jpg Wow! That looks awesome. How does it feel shouldered? I don't really care about swapping the buttplate so much as getting the shorter length. Did you stipple that stock? |

All said and done it is the same length as a standard Garand stock, so yes it does feel better. I added heavy layers of Marine-Tex epoxy for the stippling. |

Is that krylon on yours? I'm thinking about having the whole thing hydrodipped when I finish messing with it. Quick and dirty way on the buttpad would be to mate up with srews and dremel to fit? |

There are some websites out there with better instructions, but the gist of the MarineTex is to tape off, apply and tap with a popsicle stick to get the texture. As it starts to set, remove the tape. The paint is a base coat of Alumahyde with Krylon camo and a top coat of clear Alumahyde. I think you'll be surprised with how much material you'll be removing and I think the dremel approach will end up looking pretty bad, especially because you have no way to maintain the grind angles. There is a combination of hard plastic and soft rubber to remove and even when I do it with a jig and disc sander I can get chatter marks if I'm not paying attention. |
