What is the purpose of adjustable gas nuts on M1 Garands?

Do they make it possible to safely shoot higher pressure ammo?

How do they work?  How are they used?

Is the Schuster gas nut any good?

Mc Cann is the the better of the two since it uses screw in type ports instead of just an allen type screw that you slowly back out until you get the correct effect (read if you have to pull the plug, then with the Mc can, you just drop the old port back in, instead of having to retest for the correct amount to back the allen screw back out).

Was it does is let the unneed gas exscape out the front, instead of hammering the opt rod back.

The effect of this is it allows you to tune the gas system down to the point that the rifle just cycles, and in regards to hotter loads, yes is allow you to shoot them without worry about bending the opt rod.

Does all the above apply to the M1A adjustable gas nuts?  I've got some Hornady Magnum rounds that are burning a hole in my pocket

Yes and no, if you can bend an M1a opt rod with a hot load before blowing up the rifle, you're a brave man.

As for the Hornady Magnum loads in the M1a, Don't even waste your time.
The load uses slower powder than 4064, which means higher residual bore pressure as the bullet passes the barrel port, and the Opt rods starts to move before the bullet has left the barrel.

Simple Terms, the rounds are going to shoot like shit in anything less than a bolt-action rifle since the powder used is just too slow for autoloader cycling.
