I will soon have some play money available, will be about $2000. I'm looking at getting either a Fulton Armory M1A or a DSA SA 58 version. Costs are about the same, will want a good scope on it. I've already got a very nice Colt AR and a M1 Garand, so these are covered. Don't know much about the STG 58s either. Suggestions? (Am also posting this in the M1A/M1 and FAL forums) rk |
| DSA StG58, with IOR M2 scope, DSA mount, and a few other odds and ends will run you about $1300 or so, and, at this time, is a superior value to SA's products. Add another $200 for mags and an Izzy style bolt carrier and operating handle, and you will have a rifle equal to, or better than any rack-grade M1A, especially the new ones. |

find a used Chinese M14s - can be had sometimes for less than $700 (I paid $625 for mine) get USGI bolt, trigger group, and sights (if that fancies you) get a Rooster 33 guide rod and bolt catch (can't find the link) have a good gunsmith fit the parts for you (maybe install a better barrel or at least do some accuracy work [e.g. unitize the gas cylinder]) I used West Texas Ordnance http://groups.msn.com/WestTexasOrdnance/m14rifles.msnw with that your at $1k or so depending on how much you pay for the rifle, parts, and gunsmithing with the remainder you find a good used Smith Enterprise, ARMS, or other quality scope mount and some glass I haven't got my mount or glass yet...finishing up another project first...as far as glas I am considering an illuminated IOR scope - my M14S will also soon be sporting an improved USGI fiberglass stock by LAW483 and camo by whamo-camo |
| Dude, spend your money at DSA. If you had ANY M14 rifle and an SA58 on the same bench, after tons and tons of trying them both. I am convinced the FAL is just a better rifle. Many will argue with that here, and I have tried to convince myself the M1A is better, it's just not. |
