I have a 2 stage siphon / gravity feed air brush we've been using for refinishing. Lately it's been "pulsing" for lack of a better word. If I take the bottle off and just run air through it, it's a steady stream, but as soon as I add liquid to the mix it starts doing that. Which results in it spitting the paint on the metal. I bypassed our regulator and water separator and ran the brush right off the compressor and it still does it. I tried a second air brush and it didn't do it. I took the brush completely apart and soaked the main body over night in spray gun cleaner which seemed to improve it a bit. Anyone ever run into this or know how to fix it? |
There is a hole in the main body that runs parallel to the hole in the center. It goes back as far as the fitting the air line hooks on to. I pushed a piece of wire in it to see if it was clogged up, however it hit something solid and I can't see where the other end of it is. When I unscrewed the fitting the air line hooks onto there is a smaller hole parallel to the center hole. I'm wondering it that is the other end of the hole that runs parallel to the center hole.... Would pics help?

I have had Badger airbrushes do that. The needle seal wears out and air starts leaking into the paint stream ahead of the nozzle, replacing the needle seal fixes the problem. Gary |
Thanks Gary. I got my air brush off e-bay. It has Mac Tools on it but no doubt it was made by another company. the only "seal" I've seen in it is a small white (nylon?) gasket that goes around the threads of the nozzle where it screws into the main body of the air brush. Is that what you are referring to? |
I looked up airbrushes on the Mac Tools web page. I found the manual for the model AB480 air brush. AB480 Manual It has a parts diagram on page 9. They call the needle seal "Needle packing" part #4 on the diagram. I would replace that part first. Gary |
Mine doesn't look a thing like that. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow. It's more like this style.

Well I went at it again today trying to solve the problem. We have quite a few rifles that are waiting to be refinished and now that Christmas is over...gotta get em done. I changed the nylon washer that goes between the nozzle and the body of the gun and that didn't fix it. However while I was screwing around with that, I noticed air was coming out between the nozzle and body. So I get the handy little wrench that came with the air brush and give the nozzle a little twist to tighten it up some more. ( I've only been putting it on finger tight when I clean the brush) Voila..problem solved. No more spitting... So I caused the problem when I was cleaning it really well, trying to fix the problem...

I moved from a cup feed Pachee to a gravity feed Iwata revolution and never looked back. Cleaning the Iwata gravity feed is like flushing a toilet. Just rinse and flush. I highly recommend going that direction if you ever decide to upgrade your airbrush. Article from Aircraft Resource Center website

I've been considering this one. Only because you can get these for it.  We preheat the parts and I lose valuable time having to refill small cups. that is the only reason I changed to a siphon feed, so I could get a bigger bottle.
That isn't what I was thinking when I discovered the problem..
