Has the air-rifle concept ever been pursued in a more serious weapon design beyond .177 cal hobby and small-game guns?

Are there any prototypes or production weapons out there designed as combat or self-defense weapons?  It hasn't caught on so I assume it is not workable, but I figure someone has tried it at one point or another.

The Austrian Girardoni 11mm air rifle of 1790 was used succesfully as a sniper weapon during the Napoleonic Wars, and that anyone caught with one was deemed an "assassin" by Napoleon, and thus subject to execution. Lewis and Clark also carried one on their travels... it is well documented in their journal.
