Black Hills loads Amax 168 in their Gold line which is thier hunting series.  I don't much like that bullet. Is it just me?

The AMax is not nor ever has been a hunting bullet!  It is a target bullet nothing more nothing less!  Now, you may want to consider that Hornady has a 165gr SST which is a hunting bullet!  I would think good read on WHY people should not use TARGET bullets for hunting! http://www.shootingtimes.com/ammunition/ST_matchbullets_200909/index.html

The guy who wrote the article finally admits he uses .338 Lapua target rounds to hunt with.   Don't ask Hornady Techs if Amax is good to hunt or Sierra if their SMK is good to hunt with unless you want a sermon.  It appears they are sensitive to the subject.
Even though the SST looks alot like an Amax, the internal construction is somewhat different, to help regulate controlled expansion and other desired terminal ballistic characteristics.  Accubonds, Interbonds, etc. are also good hunting rounds.

To the OP:
NO SIR YOU USED THE AMAX AS A HUNTING ROUND!  YOU MADE A CONSCIOUS CHOICE!  NOT WHAT IT IS INTENDED TO DO! PERIOD!

If SMK's work so well Sierra has 165gr SBT that is probably as accurate as can be!  You have to spend the time at the range WORKING OUT the specifics!
Right tool for the right job! YOU GOTTA DO THE LEG WORK!

An a max coming out of a 338 Lapua on a whitetail? There wouldnt be any meat left on the poor critter.

I for one love the A-max and V-max series of bullets. Hyper accurate in my guns
