Watching an award screener...
Really bad, unfortunately. A good story would have allowed me to overlook the horrible authenticity issues, but alas, no. Nonsensical story and characters. Authenticity: First image of the movie is of an M1 Abrams rolling down a rubble street in Fallujah, but it becomes immediately clear that this "tank" is actually an M60 chassis and tracks with an M1 hull and turret comped in as a visual effect. And unfortunately it gets worse... Actors are clearly instructed to "fake" the recoil of their rifles due to the use of blanks. "Marines" are carrying M16s that still have the wet, black look of just having been removed from the FN shipping crates. The worst part is that I'm only 45 mins in... |
| Does part of the movie take place in Ramadi? Some of the guys in my platoon did fortification / Hesco work at Shark Base, by Camp AR-Ramadi across the river from Camp Blue Diamond and met some Seals stationed there - I wonder if Kyle was there. I am curious if the movie follows closely to the book or deviates. |

It follows each of his 4 tours, but the whole thing is so hard to follow. Didn't read the book, but it is cut like a book rather than a movie. Didn't work for me. Whole thing just didn't work. |

Oh hell yeah! Me too. And some of the still shots and clips I've seen, the weapons (Kyle's anyways) looked to be spot on as far as authenticity. His rifle is okay, some things aren't right about it. That didn't bother me as much as the basics. Just lower your expectations and you'll be okay. |

So which stick is he using for most of the movie? The Mk13? Any SR-25 or Mk12 action? Quoted:

You've been able to get "award screeners" on the internetz for about a decade now. Quoted:

How are you watching the movie? Doesn't it come out Christmas Day? You've been able to get "award screeners" on the internetz for about a decade now. Well there's the lead to this story. How do we go about doing that? |

So, how was the rest of the movie? I sort of tuned out at some point, started reading with it playing in the background. That says something pretty negatively because I really wanted to see and like this film. Every year starting just before Thanksgiving the award screeners start to arrive and it never fails that at least once per season, some studio goes through the trouble to create and distribute screeners "for award consideration" for a film that has no hope of garnering a nomination let alone an actual award. I never thought this would be that film. I listened in mere 2.0 stereo, so maybe the sound design is just spectacular... |

Maybe it's just me, but it's rare that I see a movie or show that depicts recoil with a overly realistic look. Actually, I've been watching the show Alias on Netflix and I'm season 3 and there was one time she was shooting at a car getting away and it was a close up shot. And it surprised me about how realistic it looked while firing. I think with an autoloader they could take a really loose grip and let the action of the slide appear to be recoiling like a real gun. But a bolt action? I guess they'd have to rig up some kind of weight inside the stock or barrel to simulate it. I don't know.
I know nothing about gun movie props. But from what I can tell, recoil characterstics on the silver screen has always been an issue. Even with movies not that old they are pathetic. In SPR the only time I saw recoil was when Tom Hanks was shooting at the tank with his .45 towards the end and it looked very delayed, like he was doing it. Or something. But there were many shots of them guys blazing away with their Garands like they were .22's. When they were up on top of the hill taking the bunker the actions on the guns were so slow, it was like, OH man. Looked like toys. Anyways... that's my rant about recoil in movies and TV shows. I think it just hasn't been done real good yet. But I haven't watched all the movies with guns in them. And there are probably some that get it right. It just seems very rare to me. |
