You guys got me! I ordered a Bushy BA-50 and am searching for a scope. Kudos for the great info, so Nightforce it is. (nmmi9100 your posts were especially helpful to me. Ammo questions. How does the American Eagle compare to surplus ball (better since its new)? How about Magtech, Barrett? Is any significantly better, or is it about buying which is the best price at the time? Clearly I'll have to put rounds down range, so I'm looking for some value ammo, but don't want crap. Any tips on judging surplus ammo or deals? At some point, I'll reload, so Boxer primed brass for me. Thanks all. |

Let me preface this by saying I've never shot anything other than Talon's remanufactured ball ammo and my own handloads. My own handloads have been all i've shot for the last 3 years. I broke in my first 50 with Talon ball and have shot Spotter Tracers for kicks a couple times.
I would suggest going with the American Eagle since it's new brass, new bullets, boxer primed, and US-made. When Barrett had IMI (Israeli-made) ammo, that was a better deal because Israeli brass, with the exception of Hebrew headstamp, is the best available brass. Now Barrett is using non-Israeli, non-US ammo and branding it as Barrett. Here would be my order of FACTORY ORIGINAL ammo quality: Israeli Military Industries (IMI) Lake City (American Eagle) Igman Barrett HSM Ball South African Ball -David Edgewood, NM |

I pretty much agree, however I have been shooting Igman for a while and my observations have been that its MV is very consistent, but dang does it have some hard primers! About 1 out of every 4 to 5 rounds I get a failure to fire, I wait the obligatory 3 or 4 minutes, reset and have a 100% success rate on the second attempt. I have never had this issue with Barrett, PMC, Surplus Winchester circa "God only knows" and reloads I have purchased, so I doubt that it is my BA 50 ( Cobb original ), but I could be wrong. I have been before. |
