I've been having issues with my SBR and reloaded ammo and was wondering if anyone here would have any ideas. It's Red X Arms 7.5" upper on a Surplus Arms & Ammo lower. I have no issues whatsoever when I shoot factory ammo through it...nada. It runs fine. When I run my reloads through it, however, that's when the problems start. The gun will fire about 3 rounds or so just fine, then it feeds the next live round but the bolt fails to close completely so the round doesn't fire. Also, the bolt gets STUCK...BAD. I have a hell of a time getting it open and sometimes have to resort to a rubber mallet on the charging handle to break it free. When I get it open, it ejects the live round that was in the chamber, feeds and fires several more just fine, then gets stuck again. I initially thought it was something with the reloads so we tried them through my son's 16" PSA upper on an Anderson lower and all the remaining rounds - about 150 -fired flawlessly through his. I'm thinking it's my gun and I"m totally new to the SBR world so I'm at a loss. Any ideas?
Thanks! |

First thing I would do is detail strip and clean the gun. Apply a liberal amount of lube upon reassembly. I mean I would run that gun WET. It won't hurt anything to do so.
Also make sure your extractor has the O Ring, as mentioned above. After that I would play with buffers and springs. You could also inspect the chamber for any imperfections that could cause a round to hang up but those should smooth out within a few hundred rounds automatically. Any gun with a <10.5" barrel can get finicky so you'll probably have to play around some, or just shoot it some more to break it in. |
| Great, thanks. I'll try the o-ring and see if that makes a difference. Right now it only seems to be happening with reloads and like I said, it extracts without any problems but when the bolt closes with a new unfired round it fails to close the whole way and gets stuck. Thanks again! |

Have you tried small base dies? Make sure your resizing dies are set all the way down, If the chamber is tighter than the others it will not be as forgiving. You could also check your buffer spring, if its too weak your bolt will not go completely into battery especially with the first few rounds of a full mag. I has a few issues with my Troy PDW when it was brand new, the bolt locked into the barrel extension a bit tighter that the others I own, only with ammo in it. After about 50-100 rds it started acting right. May just need a little break in. |

IF you've tried multiple brands of factory ammo and it worked I would completely bypass what everyone else said and look at your reloads for the problem. I shoot a lot of subsonic reloads and they tend to be a little pickier about the chamber, I would imaging your OAL is too long or maybe crimp related. Have you tried the marker method and chambering one to see if it is hitting the lands?
I'm no reload genie, I have a few recipes that work and I stick with them, but your problem is with your loads IMO, not your rifle. Post in the reload section and see what they say. |
