i just got a preban reciever and its got a grey colored hard coat on it. i was going to strip it and have the lower and a stag upper anodized.

i was wondering if anyone knew if there would be a difference in color between the cast lower reciever and my forged upper reciever?

Contact www.usanodizing.com––  they can  tell you. I suspect that the match will not be perfect because I don't believe the cast receivers are made from 7075 aluminum like the forged ones.

Yes there will be a color difference, but if you are going with black anodizing, I don't know if it will be that noticable.

I don't believe U.S. Anodizing does type III hard coat anodizing in brown/fde as they only show shades of black/gray on their website for type III.  You would have to use type II which is not as thick or durable.

Actually I just heard back from them and they can even do different shades of FDE in Type III hard anodized. I will be sending them my upper and lower.

Did they tell you what colors they can do in Type III?  How long is their wait?

They said they can do Daniel Defense FDE and Magpul FDE in Type III.

I have considered sending my preban lower to US Anodizing as well. I'm just not crazy about sending my $700 lower in the mail, insurance would make shipping quite expensive.

Let us know how it goes if you go through with it lostman.

I asked them about a cast lower and was told that it would not be black if hard coated. Only a dark grey was what was possible.

Sounds good, I can't wait to see how it turns out.  Is that about a month turn around time?  Not bad.

I was recently in the same boat, I am in NY and picked up a grey colt preban lower to go with a new Noveske MUR (hard anodize) upper.  I wasn't too happy with my expensive 2 tone build, so  I did some research and ended up sending Norrell an email.   The owner (John) sent me back an informative email, which convinced me to go with his product (flat black) and just refinish the preban lower.   The thing came out awesome , it matches so well that everyone that I have shown it to thinks it is factory build .
All it cost was $28 for the norrells molly coat, $8 for 2 cans of brake  degreaser and a few hours to take it apart, spray it (with an airbrush), bake it in the oven and put it back together (3.5 hrs with an hour in the oven).
