I always read about how 178gr AMAX will and will not work out of a 1/12 barrel and was curious if anyone has pictures of extended ranges showing this setup working. Supplies is very scarce in my area and often times very high priced as I am sure it is in other parts of the country. I am able to pick up some Winchester LR Primers locally and was looking to start developing a load to shoot to 800 and occasionally the 1000 yard shot at steel of course. I will also be doing some hunting with the same load as well, but will be limiting myself to 500 yards max when hunting.
I am really debating between the AMAX 168 / 178, 175 SMK, or the Berger VLD 168. A little unsure weather my 19" 1/12 barrel will stabilize the heavier bullets. So I am asking for some real world experience from you guys. Also some projectile length measurements would be spectacular. Intended uses as listed: 800 yard practice, I live in Oklahoma so wind is a huge factor. Capable of taking White Tail sized game and smaller. Rifle: Remington 700 Varmint .308 1/12 Rifling 19" Barrel XLR Ind. Evolution Chassis |

If you didn't know Hornady is starting to discontinue the 178 amax and I think the 168 as well. I shoot 175 SMK and love them out of a 22" barrel... I believe it is the 178 BTHP that is being suspended, not the AMAX. This is what I have heard also, it is the 178bthp not the amax they are dropping (at least for awhile) |

I run 178 AMAX's out of a 20'' 1/12 Remington SPS Tactical. I can make consistent hits on a man size steel plate out to 1k. That is more than good enough for me.
Can't remember the OAL off the top of my head, but I am using 44.0 gr of Varget and a Remington 9 1/2 large rifle primer. |
| Some nice groups there, I have access to several types of berger bullets, but am little weary as I am told they are very picky when it comes to seating depth. And when feeding from an AICS magazine I am very limited. Have any of you noticed a difference between AMAX and SMK when loading from magazine length? |

What I did was just use my SMK seating die setting and let the chips fall where they may. Worked pretty good. As far as the bergers... depends on the bullet. The VLDs in a factory Rem 700 chamber will definitely need to be longer than mag length. I loaded some to mag length in 7 mag at the insistance of a buddy. HOLY SMOKES did they shoot bad. 1 out of three wasn't even on cardboard at 200 yards. The other two were like a foot apart. We've had good luck with them mag length in a custom krieger 300 WM. That barrel doesn't have the horrendous jump that a factory REM 700 does. |
