Thats an HE round from the Type 89 Heavy Grenade Discharger (hachi-kyu-shiki ju-tekidanto, or more commonly just tekidanto).

None of the Japanese found out the hard way.....(old wives tale).  The term Knee Mortar was an English name based on its design.  The Japs knew what they were doing.

Of course the Japanese knew how to use their own weapons properly...the broken thighs were suffered by U.S. Marines utilizing captured ones on Guadalcanal.

The most recent shotgun news has an article on the Japanese knee mortal very informative. I did not know the collectors value was between $300.00-$1500.00 depending on condition!
