I think this cartridge has quite a bit of potential. I'd love to hear some results from the range and re-loading bench. |

I have a GA Precision sniper rifle built in .300WSM. I had George build it about a year ago. I am shooting Winchester factory in it till I get a couple hundred pieces of brass emptied. It is shooting a little less than 1/2" with factory. George is getting .25 with hand rolled stuff. Mind you this is a $2900 precision rifle. The absence of the belt as found on the 300 WM allows the headspace to be set precisley as 300 WSM is not headspacing on the belt. Also the powder burn is more consisitant due to the short er and denser powder column in the case as compared with 300 WM. Muzzle velocity is a little lower than comparable bullet weights in 300 WM but accuracy is greatly improved. Denny |
Thanks. That is in accordance with what I've read and suspected about the cartridge. Do you know what loads George is using? Bullet weight (180s?), powder and charge etc? I really like what I've learned about this round already. It seems like it may just be able to fill quite a few roles that until now have required several different calibres. (I.E. super accuracy=.308win., large North American game requires .30-06 or .300WM but w/o serious accuaracy potenetial, etc.) I'm curious how the round perfoms at slightly lower charge levels/densities than full power. It should do quite nicely with the fat case (while providing less recoil than full boat loads) while still providing a signficant velocity increase with heavier bullets (180s)over .308win. I can see it as a good replacement for .308 at distances beyond 800 meters (and much more accuracy potential than .30-06). |

A friend of mine has a Browning in 300 WSM. It gets 0.75" groups at 100 yards. He was unimpressed with the terminal performance, but that probably had a lot to do with the fact that he was using those shitty Fail Safes. IIRC from the reloading manual, it trails the 300 WM by only 30 fps or so. The 300 Wby has about 30 fps on the 300 WM, and the 300 RUM has about 20 fps on the Wby, so all of them are in the same ballpark (assuming identical barrel lengths). I have the 270 WSM; I have not shot it enough to have a good idea of its accuracy, but the antelope I shot last year didn't even have time to flinch before meeting its maker. |
