I have a Eotech and and a Zeiss redt dot on my  (one on each of my MSARs) MSAR. I have two.
I was shooting the Eotech one and notice the site plane is quite offset from the barrel. When I shoot at the target I find that the elevation can vary quite a bit at different distances with the Eotech but no so much with the Zeiss.
Anyone else noticed?

So you have them both mounted on at the same time???

I don't have those products so I can't tell you much.

All I can tell you though is that when I ordered my LT-104 mount and it was back ordered by a few days I was forced to get some cheap weaver rings for my TR24G and only had enough time to sight her in to where the shots were in the "general vicinity" of the target I was aiming at . When I finally got my LT-104 in and went to the range to sight her in..............she was dead on at 50yds on the first shot and I was like this :

If I can decipher what you said, you are seeing differences from point of aim to point of impact (POA/POI) at varying distances, and that one optic is different than the other?  Is one optic taller than the other?  If so, this would account for the differences you are seeing.

It's basic physics.  The bullet travels in an arc, and when you zero your rifle for a given range, you are essentially changing how high the muzzle is pointed in order to make the arc coincide with your desired POI.

The other critical element is how high the optic is above the bore.  At long distance this doesn't matter that much, but at closer ranges the difference is easy to see.

I searched around a bit and found this article which may explain things a little better:  http://www.bobtuley.com/external.htm

i imagine it's because the eotech is taller than the zeiss.

Yes, I was trying to talk about the difference in POI/POA because of the offset. I'm not used to it.
I zero at 50m and at 25m I'm about 6" high. The Eotech is the one that's bad, the zeiss sits low and is maybe 4" off.
Just asking....My AR15s aren't nearly as bad.

I'd try zeroing it at 100yds to see if you can take out some of the issue at closer range.

DO you have an E4 or an STG556?

If it's the latter, you could always get a lower rail to mount the eotech on.

Hmmm...  If you zero at 50 your POI should be below your POA at 25.  I zero my Aimpoint at 50yds, and have to hold about 4" higher at 25.

Think about it this way:  If you put up a target that looks like a human and sighted in right between his eyes––and then walked towards it (still holding your POA) until the muzzle touched the target––the muzzle would be touching near his mouth due to the difference in height between the optic and the bore.  This is the POI/POA difference you see at ranges nearer to the target.
