turn th ebolt on its side look at which side has the larger head of the "pin" showing. that side goes face down. use drift punch to push out from other side.  keep punch in bolt after the factory pin falls out. slowly remove the drift punch while taking the f/pin out.

The only SKS bolt I've worked on was quite a pain to get disassembled though. Really had to beat on the retaining pin to get it to come out...

ETA   Got it!!! totally clean and put back together.Firing pin now rattles like it's supposed to do!   And only a few parts left over!!!(I Keed)

So was it all gunked up with cosmoline, or was it corroded?

It's a good idea to clean the surplus bolts on SKSs when you first get them. Get some grit in there with the gummy cosmoline and the firing pin will stick forward causing a very unsafe malfunction...and then the ATF might pay you a visit.
