| Well, I took my HBAR 20" Del-Ton out to bust some badgers open this morning. There I am, laying back, relaxing, looking the other way...when I turn my head back to the left, a HUGE badger (sure...that's what they all say!) is walking 30 yards in front of me without the foggiest damn clue I am right there. Easy! This dude's toast, right? Wrong!!! After I raise up and put him in the crosshairs, he sees me and does an immediate about-face. I aim right in front of his nose...CLICK! Oh shit...so, being somewhat of a rookie, I just believed I had not chambered the round when I thought I did (I actually looked to ensure it got chambered but it was dark when I did it, so I doubted whether it really happened). Now, I was putting my gear away and see that the first bullet from my mag (I put the ejected FTF back in the mag) has a slight dimple on the primer. Is this what is known as a "light primer strike"? I had just taken this rifle out last week and put 100 flawless rounds through it (the cheaper American Eagle 55gr.). My hunting stuff was HSM with 53gr Berger bullets. Did I miss something...has this happened with anyone else? BTW- the smarmy little prick danced his ass right back into the luxury of his den. Thanks. |

Sounds like the bolt/carrier weren't in full battery. This may have happened when you "checked" the chamber. Loading a typical AR will put a small dent into the primer due to the free floating firing pin. You may have pulled the charging handle to check the chamber and it didn't return to battery when you let it return. This is a good time to use the forward assist. |
It is also possible you had previously chambered the round which will put a small mark on the primer. You may have failed to securely lock the magazine in the well and cycled the bolt but not stripping off the top round. Ask me how I know.............
I now try to remember to listen for the click when inserting the mag so I know the mag is locked into place. I have also been known to tug on a seated mag to make sure it does not come out of the well. Regardless what happened Critter got a pass, sometimes you have the luck sometimes they have the luck. |
