I am going to be trading a RIA 1911 FS for the top FAL STG 58 parts kit in the pic. My question to ya'll, what receiver should I get? I am looking at coonan receiver right now and also at DSA. Anywhere else I should look? I will be going to pick it up from my buddy tomorrow.Attached File

Correct receiver for that build is a Type I metric. DSA builds their receivers on the same factory FN tooling that was used by Austria under license, and was sold to DS Arms when Austria discontinued their production. However, any Type I metric receiver will be period-correct.

Where else can you find a type 1 FAL receiver in the USA other than DSA?

New production? Dunno.

Coonan's done runs, there's potentially lots of new old-stock out there from many different makers. I'm not helping source it, just giving the period-correct receiver type.

Both a Type 1 or 2 receiver would be fine and correct.

DSA has occasional issues, but they will take care of you. If you have a problem with a Coonan, tough shit. Keep that in mind.

Are those two the only manufacturers of receivers now? This is going to be my first FAL. Wished I had gotten one years ago when parts kits and receivers were everywhere.

Isn't the Coonan a type 1?

Imbel type 3 would be correct also and made by licensed manufacturer.

If it were mine, I would mount that kit on a DS Arms Type 1. I used to be an enthusiastic proponent of Coonan receivers. They have murdered that enthusiasm. DS Arms has had their problems, but so far, they have been top notch in correcting them.

DSA never used FN or Steyr tooling.  They got the blueprints from Steyr and LMT made the receivers for them according to the specs.  DSA now makes the receivers in-house, mostly cast now but some forged, and they are no longer being made to spec or with the highest quality controul.

The recoil plate on the lower receiver will indicate what the best receiver type to use will be.  For a StG-58 kit, an older LMT-made DSA receiver would be the best way to go.

I wonder what the story on that bottom kit is?

Century/Hesse that got the owner frustrated?

For the love of God, please stick with the DSA...Coonan is nice but they add some stuff to it for their own reasons and it doesn't make it authentic.

Type 1 and type 2 would work but a type 3 would work also but not authentic and correct.

Their are reports that type 3s were used in later productions by Steyr but depending on your serial number. The best is 1 and 2.

No one else is making a correct one without have issues.

I recommend GunPlumber to assemble if needed.

I have the parts kit now. Bolt, barrel and lower are numbers matching. Serial number 880xx. So should that be a type 1 or 2 receiver? I think I got a pretty good trade for a RIA FS 1911!

Either would be correct, I like the lightning cuts on the type 2 receiver myself. Go figure, I no longer have my STG58 but, still have my G1. Regardless, here a picture of mine with both type 1 and type 2 receivers for comparison.

Still kick myself in the ass for unloading my STG58 post Sandy Hook

Just wanted to update this thread. I got the rifle together. I took a quick pic in the house of the rifle. Light wasn't great. I am super happy with the way it turned out and can't wait to get out to the range! Gonna be a few months as I had surgery on my ankle and an stuck at home. Attached File

Very nice. Give us some more pics. Is there special tooling required to build a FAL?

I'll get some more tomorrow. By me saying I got it together, I mean I sent it off to have the barrel out in the upper and headspaced. There are tools a guy on falfiles sells. I didn't even attempt to build this rifle because the parts kit is worth too much.

I would recommend getting a set of military surplus synthetic hand guards for shooting and keep the metal for display. I would also encourage you to remove the bi pod when shooting and reinstall for display. The bi pods on these rifles were not meant for precision shooting, but rather to better control the rifle in full auto fire. For semi auto fire, they are group killers.

That would be like making Jessica Alba wear a Burka   I am  sure that he means well, but please don't do that. Military surplus or DSA hand guards.
