I have a couple boxes of Winchester Metric 7.62X54R 180gr. Soft Point Lot #. 235-111 that are showing signs of excessive pressure. The symptoms first showed up in my PSL. The signs included primer cratering and flow as well as pierced primers. Evidence of brass flow on the case head also present. I was not convinced that the problem was not simply a rifle issue so I fired rounds from the same box through two Mosin Nagant rifles in excellent condition with no history of issues. The first round fired resulted in a ruptured/pierced primer and extremely hard extraction, cratering of the primers also present on following rounds fired form the Nagants. Headspace checked as well as firing pin protrusion check made on all rifles involved. I have decided to pull down the remaining rounds. Other past lots of Winchester Metric fired from same rifles resulted in no issues. YMMV

IIRC, you should be using the lighter grain 7.62 x 54r in that PSL - 147 g I think?

The heavy grain is for Mosin style rifles.

That's what I was told anyway and I may have the bullet weights wrong, but the gist is:

Switch ammo and see if you have a different result.

My PSL hasn't had an issue in the past with this load. I fired a few rounds of the same type from a different lot on the same day with no issues. The problems carried over to the Mosins as well, so I believe this maybe a batch of out of spec. ammo. Just be wary of the same Lot.#

heavier grain 54r was used in machine guns such as pkm,dp28. the light ball was used in mosions.

Winchester sent a call tag for some weird Israeli white box 223 that I called and talked to them about.  One was a partial box.  It might be worth a phone call to see if they will send call tag to exchange the ammo.  It isn't worth the price of shipping to exchange, but if Winchester pays for it........

Otherwise, I would definitely pull them down for the brass.
