Those holes in the side are there for a peep sight I think. I'm pretty sure that Marlin puts them there themselves. They usually put screws in the holes to cover them up, but whoever owned that gun might have just lost them.

Four holes, in groups of two(each set about half an inch apart, the sets about 2 inches or so apart-like this––- O O––––––––––––O O). Left side of barrel, breech end near where it goes into the receiver.I was told by one person locally that there was a common Weaver scope base that attached to the barrel in that way. |
