I have a 10/22 barrel i bought that was a 'seconds' barrel. It shoots great, but the outside of the barrel is messed up.
For some reason, inside the flutes, it's finished...not really blued, but some sort of rough finish. The rest of the barrel outside the fluting is bare steel. It's been fine for a while but now i'm starting to get some surface rusting going on and it looks terrible. What are my options? Can i just steel wool the rust and rattle can it? Do i need a primer? is one type of spray paint needed or better than others? Trying to do this cheap since the whole point of buying a seconds barrel is the price... |

Steel wool will work, but a Scotchbrite pad is better and will shine the barrel right up. The problem with steel wool is the embedded fibers that get left behind, because the rust even easier than a carbon steel barrel.
Primer certainly won't hurt adhesion, and since this is a low buck job, use what ever paint from Walmart that has a color you like. If the finish starts to look rough, repaint, or just enjoy the used look. If you want to polish the flutes, use abrasive paper backed with a dowel. You can probably force a piece of Scotchbrite in there, too. The backer will increase the pressure against the surface and make the work go fast. |
