| What advantage would a springfield M1A scout have over a socom 1? The scout has an 18" barrel and the socom a 16". Is there any reason the 16" wouldn't be desireable? |
| I like the socom for the better handling, that being said the scout uses the standard length gas system which is provin, the 16" has modified gas port, mine has been reliable, but its not as provin as system as the standard gas system. Obviously you will lose some velocity with shorter barrel. I own a socom, scout, and rifle, the rifle and scout are 2-3 moa rifles with surplus ammo and optics, the scout is 2.5-3.5 with an Aimpoint. |

The SOCOM has a 16.25" barrel and now that SEI has a DC Vortex muzzle kit available for the SOCOM both the 18.0" Scout and SOCOM can have a DC Vortex or DC Comp. SEI's SOCOM kit also gives the owner additional front sight options for improved accuracy. The extra 1.75 inches of barrel on the Scout will deliver additional muzzle velocity and reach. Both are excellent, get the one you want or get both  |
Out to 200 yards you should be good to go. Your muzzle velocity for a round moving 2740fps out of a 22" barrel should run about 2500fps out of a 16" barrel. At 200 yards it won't make much of a difference. |
