Does barrel length make any difference in sound? What I mean is, will a 20 in barrel be quieter that a 16 in barrel, either suppressed or unsuppressed?

I seem to recall hearing a 18 in .22 rifle next to a 16 in .22 rifle, both unsuppressed, using the same ammo, and the longer rifle was quieter. I am just wondering if the longer barrel helps with other calibers as well and also if the longer barrels make a difference when suppressed.

I am new to suppressors, I am still waiting on my first, I have not even heard a suppressor in person yet, so I have some questions about them still.

Most certainly.  A 20" gun will be quieter than 16" and shorter.

Not only is the sound quieter all around from the longer barrel, the sound is also further away from the shooter's ear.

Speaking of this, have you ever hear of a metro barrel for a shotgun?  It's a six foot extended barrel that suppresses a shotgun for people who like to duck hunt in urban areas.  It gets around the NFA because it's a barrel.

Longer barrels are quieter because more gunpowder is burned inside the barrel. Of course I personally prefer short barrels just because when you add a suppressor it adds to the overall length of the weapon. An 11.5" barrel with suppressor handles like a regular unsuppressed 16" AR-15 because they are the same overall length.
