I have a problem with ammo loaded with barry's short stroking my Glock 17. I don't know why but the guy at the range said it's the recoil spring assembly too heavy, but it's completely factory stock.

The gun cycles fine with factory ammo but it won't operate the slide at all with reloads loaded with Barry's.

I'm using Barry's 124gr bullet with about 5 grains of Green dot. Do you think I should try Unique since it allows higher velocity, so perhaps it will have enough recoil to properly operate the slide? I'm trying to stay below 1200fps so I don't lead the barrel but at the same time I would like the gun to cycle as well.

This thread will be better off in the reloading forum.

Isn't green dot primarily a shot gun powder? I don't even see load data for 9mm
http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/Powder.aspx?powderid=5

I see some loads for heavier projectiles in 45...

Might look in to another powder with a burn rate more suited for 9mm? If you like Alliant, Power Pistol and Unique have good feedback for 9mm.

I've used about 4,000 rds of berrys 9mm 124 gr.  Round nose last year not a single problem in my g34,19 and 17 all stock guns. I use power pistol powder Winchester primers.
If you want the load data I can look tonight when I get home I can't remember the exact numbers off the top of my head.

Most shotgun and pistol powders are cross compatible... not necessarily the best choice in either but they both work.

The problem is mainly feeding. I think my Glock RSA is too heavy but I have no way to conclusively measure it... But I do know the Barry load I did has less felt recoil compared to most factory ammo.

Is the gun new? My G19 did the same thing with light loads using Berrys. Short stroke induced fail to feed. Sounds like you just need a bit more oomph to cycle.

Does this load lock the slide on empty every time?

My manual isn't showing Green Dot in that weight 9mm, might want to look at a different powder. Other than that work up your load a bit, Glocks can handle and are designed to run NATO pressure ammo.

I have around 800 on that G19 now and the RSA is broken in enough to cycle weak ammo.

Based on what I can find online 5.0gr shoulda done the trick.

It's a faster powder...No. 17 on the list right ahead of WST.  Most don't show going over 4.5-4.6grs

A link to a 2005 alliant reloading manual. This was the last year of them putting out a lot of powder/bullet data that has bbl length, oal's and pressures included.

http://castpics.net/LoadData/Freebies/RM/Alliant/Alliant_2005.pdf

Starting in 2008 alliant started putting out reloading manuals with extremely limited data.

Your 5.0gr load of greendot should be in the 1100fps and 30,000psi range depending on seating depth.

The gun is one of those 80% glocks. I messed up on the rear rail a bit and I had to correct it with JB weld. It was sitting too high and as a result the sear would make limited contact meaning sometimes it would fail to fire at all.

The reload would not lock the slide on the last shot at all, while factory ammo did it more reliably (but not 100%)

I have not tried unique, I was hoping to use up all of my Green Dots.

The upper assembly is new.
