| How much for a standard dealers license? |

Quoted:
Per year? That's not bad, why don't more people otain their license? What are the requirments for a store front or brick and motar location? Jeez, guy, make an effort . . . How to become a FFL But, to answer your questions: No, that's $200 for three years. Yes, you have to be a real business these days. You CAN do it from your home, but you have to have a tax number and business license and keep posted hours. The days of the kitchen table dealer who just wants to make it easier to buy his own guns are pretty much over. Besides, there's another reason not to become a dealer. As often expressed on Arfcom, "Never invite the man into your life." |

It's never "easy" to make your living doing anything - it takes work, savvy, more work, and a bit of luck, sometimes to run any retail business. FFLs are no exception.
The common wisdom is that to make a million bucks in the gun business, you start with two million and quit before it's all gone. However, if you put work into it, and advertise, and build a customer base, and fill a business need in the community, you can actually make a profit, and have fun doing it. Most small-time FFLs are in it as a side business, where it's easy to make a consistent profit, as long as you aren't counting on your sales to put food on the table every day. |

The days of the kitchen table dealer who just wants to make it easier to buy his own guns are pretty much over. Besides, there's another reason not to become a dealer. As often expressed on Arfcom, "Never invite the man into your life." Just to clarify you can do it from your home. There is no requirement you have an actual business (though they are very though on zoning these doays so if you live in the city it might be an issue). You don't have to have a tax ID if you are getting it as an individual, and even if you get it as a corporation or LLC the tax ID is free and takes about 5 mins online. No where on the application does it ask for a "business license" though your state (not the ATF) may require you to have a sales tax permit. Again it is free, just takes a bit paper work. It is true that you do have to list your business hours on your app, but it is my understanding that they can be as little at 2 hours a week and can be in the evenings. So if you work a real job and then want to do the ffl on the side you can make your hours from like 8-10 pm on Tuesdays. But don't expect to make tons of money this way, although you can get good deals on guns for yourself and friends and make a few bucks on the side. More people don't do it because the record keeping is not fun, it takes paper work up front, it a costs a fair amount of money, the ATF will do an unannounced inspection once a year, and it is alost impossible to make a lot of money doing it. |
