I have the chance to pick up this UFH bayo for my Garand at a price to me of about $90.00.

The bayo and sheath are in good shape with no rust or pitting, and the latching mechanism seems to work just fine.  However, when I mount it onto my rifle, I found that it is not a solid mount like the bayos I have for my other non-mil surp rifles (ARs and AKs).  This bayo has both up and down, and side to side play when mounted.

The ringed portion that goes around the barrel/gas cylinder lock is definately much larger in diameter than the circumfrance required by the barrel and cylinder lock, and this seems to be where much of the loose play is (normal or altered?).

This is my first experience with a bayonet set up for a Garand and I need to know if all this "looseness" is normal.  I'd really like to have a bayo for this rifle, and from what I've been seeing, $90 is not a great price, but it is fair.  However, I do not want to pay any amount of money for a bayonet that is defective.  Thanks to all in advace for your help with this...

In my limited experience with bayonets on M1s (mostly through living-history or reenactor types), some play is relatively normal...might be why they weren't fixed in combat, that kind of weight moving around at the muzzle could probably mess up your POI pretty well.

Disclosure: I don't have a bayonet for my M1, nor have I ever put one on it.
Nice piece though.

That bayo looks modified with perhaps a new hilt. The ring is too large.

Ok ARDog, then what you're saying is that a boyonet for the M1 Garand should be a solid fit and not have this much play in it?  Also, how can I tell if the hilt has been changed?  It doesn't appear to have been swapped as the two pins in the hilt have the serial number stamped over them...

i have a 10" U.F.H. bayonet for mine and it is the same way. has alot of play in it and swings side to side a tiny bit. i dont think it was ever meant to be super tight on the barrel

I think I was wrong.
I have the exact same bayo and have it clipped on a Garand right in front of me. I thought from your front view pic that there was space completely around your ring. After looking at mine I see that your bushing, which surrounds the lower five eighths of the way around the barrel, is there on yours and appeared to be behind the ring in your pic.
My Garand bayo has almost no slop up and down and does rattle some from side to side.
For reference I am not able to slip a matchbook cover corner between the bushing and the inside ring of the bayonet. There is just enough room to fit a piece of copy paper in there.

I also have bayo's mounted on an AR-15 which is far worse for rattle and two mounted on M14 clones. One is so tight that I will have trouble removing it without a rubber mallet. The other is sloppier than the UF on the Garand.

The only bayo I have the fits perfectly is on a 1910 M98!

I have several M1, and modified 10" bayos and all are loose on M1 rifles.  They are snug on M1903 rifles but rattle on the M1s.  The only tight fitting one I have is a nonmodified SA 16".
