Picked up a Remington 870 last night for a great price, but it has some surface rust of the receiver. What would be the best way to go about removing it while still keeping the finish intact?

Oil and bronze  wool has worked great for me.  Oil only if really light.

Can't seem to find my bronze brush that was in my cleaning kit, would 0000 steel wool do?

I soak it in a good penetrating oil for 10 hours, then use 0000 steel wool, buffing lightly.

Oil and a brown paper bag can work if it's just really light surface rust.

i was thinking electrolysis, but it seems your rust is very light.

i recently got a winchester 1300 defender with light rust on the barrel only. a little oil and rubbing with a rag and a toothbrush fixed it quick.

i would hold off on the steel wool for now. i know its a pretty fine grade but see what you can do with the rag and a nylon brush first.

also, post some pics cause its hard to imagine the extent of whats going on with your gun.

Its like little spots, matching the inside of the soft case the previous owner gave me.

OP, my concern is that you live (or your avatar states that you live) in Florida. I wouldn't want to run the risk of the cancer spreading. I would try the least impact method first (I like the soaking in oil and light buffing idea, WD40 actually worked for me), but do watch it over time to make sure it's gone.

I just use CLP and an AP brush for light rust.

Sandblast, degrease, and apply KG Gunkote.  Mine didn't have any rust.
