I shoot at the 50-yd indoor range near my apartment quite a bit with my modified 10/22. The other day I installed a Harris bipod, and was able to get 5 rounds through a .3 inch hole (I can post some pics if anyone would like  ). I was quite pleased, because I had previously just rolled up a jacket/towel and used it to shoot off, and I generally got about 1 inch groups with that method. As I left and was showing off my groups, the range officer was like "yeah, but you cheated and used a bipod. Anyone can shoot a group like that with a bipod". I haven't been able to get back out to the range to test his theory, but I was wondering, is a bipod really "cheating"? I felt like I still worked quite hard to get those groups. |
| What a tool!!! hope you like the guy; actually a bipod can be more diff than any other type of shooting.because as you twist and move, rock back and forth, side to side, behind your rifle, and we all do in teeneh bits, your bipod will pick this up. then your bipod transfers this 'rolling torque' to the front of your weapon, so it can really open up groups, from shot to shot. most bipod shooters will actually put down a smoothe piece of laminate, or fine coat plastic, or Lacquer board, so that their bipod feet are free to move, along with their natural tiny body torquings. |

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say it was just an offhand throwaway comment. Maybe he was just teasing. (or a purist ) That said , my 10/22 with bi pod and Volquartsen trigger is so accurate at 50 yards it's almost boring. If you enjoy it, don't worry about what he says. Good for you for enjoying your shooting sport and printing such nice groups. |
Bipods tend to be more difficult to shoot, rather than bags, or rests. You did good in my book... |

IMHO that's like saying you cheated and used match ammo, or a 20x scope, or a heavy bbl. I've shot a friends really nice 10/22, with a bipod, with a very nice scope and very good ammo. just switching out the shooter makes all the difference. That's why I still need to practice .
