I remember reading about this practice in various old weapon manuals in the WWII era. I can even recall seeing this done using a lighter or something in a scene in Band of Brothers.
I recently bought a Yugo M24. With its unprotected front sight, it has lost a lot of its finish around the edges of the sight (rear sight as well tbh) and is quite shiny in the sunlight. Is there any reason why I shouldn't take a Bic and put a thin layer of soot on the sights to make them easier to see? Will this practice damage anything long-term? |

Wont damage the finish (or the bare metal where the finish is gone?) Quoted:

Or buy a can of sight black spray for about 7 bucks. Even using it regularly in bullseye competition a can lasts me a year or two Sight Black |
