I am trying to reblue an Mosin M44 carbine. I have tried using the Birchwood Casey Permablue paste, and Oxpho ?. I can't get a consistent or dark enough color. After proper prep and degreasing and several coats, all I can get is a deep translucent grey color. With a few blue spots. I'm sure that the surface is degreased properly. Any hints or suggestions? Keep in mind that this a $39 shooter grade from Coles not a Model 12 Winchester. I just want a decent finish on it, and I want it blued. |
I used the bluing kit from Walmart on an m44 I did....advertised as a cold blue kit. However, I heated up the metal in the oven to around 300 and also heated up the bluing in the microwave (be careful when doing this) and applied with cotton balls. This produced a very dark and nice even finish. I was VERY surprised at how it came out.

I didn't remove them, i just blued them in place before finishing the wood. |
