When I draw my bolt back with the charging handle, the further back into the receiver it goes, the more cocked (at an angle left-right) it gets. Is this normal?  Is the op rod notch pulling the bolt roller/bolt against something in the left of the rec.?

after reading your post i checked my springfield m1a my trw bolt mooves without cocking the bolt,
i put a little preasur on one side with my finger and cocked the bolt and it did start getting squirly. does your m1a have grease on all contact points ? it may be catchy if it hasnt enogh grease.
i think you dont have enogh grease or maybe your gun has some dirt or fould brass peaces in the channel.

i hope this will help
