I have a H&K USP SD 9mm coming soon & will get my first 9mm can for it. Can someone please explain to me why boosters are needed with some guns/cans & not others?

For the record, I have a Yankee Hill in .45acp & Tactical Innovations in .22LR already.

Thanks in advance!

Slowly pull the slide back on your gun, and notice how the barrel moves rearward with it for 1/4" to 1/2" or so, until the chamber-end of the barrel drops down and unlocks from the slide.  This is a "short recoil operated" firearm.  The barrel has to be able to move rearward and pivot downward for it to function.

Now put a relatively large weight on the end of that barrel, and fill it with baffles.  The gasses generated when you fire the gun push forward against the baffles,  countering the rearward movement of the barrel that the can is attached to.  Additionally, when the rear of the barrel pivots down, the front of the barrel pivots upward.  Put some weight on the end of the barrel and that end is not going to want to pivot upward so well.

A Beretta 92 is more tolerant, as the barrel only has the linear back and forth motion, with no pivot.  But put a large enough can on it, and that one won't run either.

A booster allows the barrel to move independent of the weight placed on the end of it for a brief amount of time.  This time is enough to allow the barrel to unlock from the slide, after which the gun functions as designed.

Ok, I understand the engineering aspect of it, but how does one know beforehand if they're gonna need a booster or not in order to enable the gun to function with the can?

I just don't wish to get caught short & have to order more stuff.................

I have a .22lr can (first one) pending right now and am looking at getting a 9mm for my Glock 19.  I have read the reasoning behind it, but I'm still unsure if I absolutely need one.  Would it hurt to have a booster if it is not needed?  If not, then I'll just go ahead and get one.

You will have 5 months to wait, when you send it the paperwork. If your running a semi auto like a 1911 or other similar pistol, you need a booster if you want the gun to cycle.  If the barrel moves, you need a booster.....

Get a booster.

Unless you are running this on something like an AR or another carbine where you don't want a booster.

Guys, it's an engineered designed part, specific to the silencer you are using it on.  It's not something where you go out and buy the can from Company X, and later add a booster from Company Y.  You order it with your silencer, from whatever company made the can, as their specific booster is designed for that specific can.

I'll make it easy for you:  Yes - you will need a booster for whatever can you are getting for your Glock.  I can think of four specific models that will run on a Glock, and not all of them are currently in production.  And they all have to be shot wet to be anywhere near effective.

So get a can with a booster and be happy.

If you have a Browning type handgun ie Glock you will need a Linear Cycling Device LCD or booster as most people call them. There is no way around this.

Also when you order the can that you want you normally get 1 mount of your choice. Be smart at the time of ordering. The LCD "booster" is more money than a fixed mount. Get the LCD a that time. Then order a fixed mount later if you want to run the can on a AR type platform.

The SWR Trident-9 is a good choice for Glocks in the 9mm flavor.

Yet my USP .45acp runs just fine with the Yankee Hill can.........................

So why wouldn't my USP SD not run as well with just the can? Someone help me understand what I'm missing here....................

YHM 45 Cobra M2's have boosters.  That might be the reason.

Forgive me, but the YHM Cobra HAS   a booster.
No wonder your gun cycles.

Enjoy your new can.

You can read the specs of the YHM Cobra HERE

Do you currently own a YHM Cobra M2 45 ACP silencer that works on your HK pistol?

What part of this do you not understand? You asked why would anyone need a booster. We all told you why you need it. We also showed you the specs and the reasons you need it. You still do not understand and do not want to listen. You get pissed at everyone. Did I miss anything??????????

Enjoy raising your post count in GD instead of your knowledge here.
