I picked up a 250rd carton of 12ga Federal Target Load #7.5 shells at a local Dunham's store on Friday.  I took a couple boxes out on Saturday and ran into some really rusty shells at the bottom of each box.  I'm new to shotguns (just bought an 870 for 3 gun) so this might be normal, but it seems awfully excessive to me.  For what it's worth, the rounds on the top of each box look fine and I can't see any sort of water damage on the boxes or on the shipping carton.

So, is this rust excessive?  Anybody have any experience working with Federal's customer support?

Call Federal. They'll most likely reimburse you or ship out a new case. They're really good about their customer service.

I would be on the phone with Federal.

Wow that's pretty bad. My guess is the store probably had them in a very damp store room or left the pallet outside in the rain for awhile before putting them on the floor.

Wow, that's really bad, this is not normal. I have had some shotgun shells for several years and they have no rust.
Make sure you donn't shoot these, and yes I would call Federal or take thenm back to Dunham's. I think they were stored in a very damp place of the store.

So far, I've had absolutely no luck getting in touch with Federal.  I sent an e-mail using the "Contact Us" on Tuesday
04/26 and haven't heard back.  I called the number on the same page
Monday 05/02 and twice on Tuesday 05/03, but it appears nobody actually answers the
phone.  I've left messages on both occasions but haven't yet heard back.
If I don't hear from Federal by the end of the week, I guess I'll try to dig up
a phone number for their executive offices.

Edit:  I'm a dumbass.

Oops, posted that while working on a Remington.  I called Federal, not Remington.

So what did the seller say?  Where they given the chance to make it right?  It seems like you are holding Federal accountable for something that PROBABLY happened in transit or most likely in the store.  Some stock clerk probably spilled his big gulp and set the box in the puddle...

i would go to the store first, i know most/all stores dont allow ammo returns but if you just want an exchange they should help you out. those are rusted pretty bad. those things must have been in a swamp, they look really really rusted. If that dosent work call the mfgr but i would guess 80% that the ammo got like that because it was stored in a damp area.

I agree with the two posters above.  Leave Federal out of this unless and until your retailer refuses to remedy the situation.

There is just no way in hell those shot shells left the factory like that.  That's poor storage doing that - a retailer's problem,... not yours,... not Federal's.

Federal might replace those, but they sure as hell don't have to.

My bet would be the boxes were stored directly on concrete in a damp/humid environment over a period of years.

Several months ago I got DQ'd from a 3 gun match because Winchester managed to mix a slug into a box of #4 high brass.

I have no doubt Federal will make it right.

However, I would sure as hell be taking some steel wool to those things and shooting them!

Better not be rust on brass! The problem is that the cheap target shells have a steel base. Not only can they rust, but the expand when shot.

Ever time I have call Federal no one answers the phone.
But they always called me back. May take 7 days or so.
When you get this cleared up. Let us know what Federal did?
One way or the other!

P.S. Where did you buy the ammo at?
