I do a lot of military caliber case conversions and will be doing even more in the future. Has anyone hit upon a way to quickly and easily mark the head stamp so I don't get my conversions mixed up. One example is the 30-06 case.  I turn these into 7.7 Jap., 8mm Mauser, and 7.65 Arg. and I also reload for 30-06 rifles.  I am also concerned about losing some at the range and some poor brass scrounger ( like myself ) having problems. I use a permanent marker at present but I am open to suggestions.

The only way I know to make a good permanent id is to file notches in the edge of the case rim.  If you don't have a zillion different cartridges to keep sorted, this would be easy; 1 notch is 7 Jap, 2 notches next to each other id another cartridge, 2 notches opposite  id another, 3 notches 90 degrees apart still another, and so on.  There are zillions of combinations.  The notches don't need to be deep, just distinctive.  I would use a triangular file.

You could also try a code of center punch marks on the case head.  Support the case on a strong bolt shank or other metal pin.  I think this would work, but notches are more distinctive.

Ballistic Products sells stickers for the case head, but I doubt they stay on well.

Markers work okay but have to be refreshed.

Color around the edges of the primer with a sharpie,Red Blue Green, Black,Purple. Just stick the tip in the groove and circle the primer.
