I just got my STG-58 kit from FAC.  I've got US parts and a receiver on the way.  What tool do I really need to get this thing together?  I'm going to order the gage pins from MSC.  Do I need every size from .254 to .270 or can I get away with every other?  I've seen a couple of different barrel wrenches, which works the best?  Anything else I'm missing?

Can I use these same tools to build anything else?  I have a G3 and a CETME next on the list.

I am by no means an expert like many of the FAL files guys, but I have built three FALs.  If you are only building one rifle, you can get away with making your own wrench out of a hard wood.  I think there is a pattern in the ARS workbook.  You can also find a pattern online from gunthings.com or just trace the receiver yourself.   If you want to buy a wrench there is a guy on FAL files who goes by "ratas calientes" who makes excellent ones, although there are other good ones out there apparently as well.  Everyone seems to agree that the Arizona Response Systems video by Mark Graham is the way to go for instruction, although you can find the basics online.  For head spacing you NEED either a GO or NOGO guage.  You can get away with every other pin guage, and if you know the length of your GO or NOGO (Forester and Clymer are the common ones, and are slightly different) you can add or subtract to find the proper size of your locking shoulder.  I bought both guages, because I wanted to make sure I didn't screw up.  I filed down two locking shoulders successfully but screwed up the third, and had to buy a new one.  If you are going to file, make sure you don't change the angle on the shoulder.  You will definitely need a caliper to make sure you are keeping the width uniform, and correct.  If you want to get a new LS check out  "gunpartsguy".  I paid too much for mine from gunthings and then saw them from the gunpartsguy.  Spend some time over at FAL files.  A lot of those guys are incredibly knowlegable, and are very willing to help.  They solved a couple of my problems for me as soon as I posted them.  I had assembled ARs, but had never actually "built" a gun until this year.  It is awesome to go out and fire something that you put together yourself, and not blow up!   Good luck!

By the way, what part of Utah are you in?  I am near the four corners, if you are in SE UT you would be welcome to borrow my wrench and guages.

I'm hoping to build several, so I don't mind buying the tools.  Especially if they'll work for some other projects I have lined up.

I have been looking to do the same and found this site. It is packed with information and the guys over on the Falfiles have been helpful as hell with a lot of the information I have been looking for regarding my first potential build.

My preferences:

ARS FAL homebuilding guide

"Ratas Caliente's" (falfiles) receiver wrench
Schneider brand is OK, but you'll have to remove
some material for a DCI receiver.

"Court in Fl" (falfiles)barrel timing tool

Clymer go / nogo HS gauges

Meyer pin gauges

US made 1 1/16 open end hand wrench and a 3'
breaker bar

Huge bench vice, bigger the better

Extractor tool

First aid kit

Tools you can make:

Shoulder shaver;
2x4 with a 1" drilled in it and 200 grit sand paper
applied over the hole and a hole cut in the SP.

Locking shoulder press;
2x4 inserts for your vice and a sharpened hardened
bolt.
