I'm starting to look for bits to build myself an AR upper and got to wondering.  Since the .22 uppers offered have 1/12 twist barrels, would an A1 barrel with an adaptor kit work?

I figure I can get a decent A1 barrel for about the same, or less, than a Spike's barrel or something similar (probably with hand guards and a fsb already on it, too).  Would a closed off gas tube port on the FSB end up in tears, cleaing/corrosion wise?  That's the only real hiccup I can think of right now.

Any thoughts?

I used a Ciener kit in a SP1 upper for a bit. Not nearly as reliable as my Spikes upper.

The 1:12 twist barrel will work pretty well but its hard to give definite accuracy because each barrel and each brand of ammo seems to make a difference in 22 rimfire.  My Brother has a new Spikes conversion kit with BDM mags He's shooting in his High Standard 16" AR with 1:9 twist.  He has about 2500 rounds  through the conversion kit and has one failure to extract.  This was probably ammo related and most of what he has shot is Federal Bulk ammo from Walmart.  The CMMG and Spikes kit seem to be having fewer issues than the Ciener conversion kits with metal mags.  If you are wanting to shoot small groups with a scope your probably better off with a 1:16 twist barrel.  I think the 1:12 twist barrel with a conversion kit is a viable option if your wanting to plink, shoot metal targets out to about 125 yards  or CQB drills.
