If you were going to buy a large quantity of .22LR (10k rounds or more), what brand and model would it be? Essentially looking for a healthy medium between accuracy and reliability in most .22LR guns.
Thanks. ETA I'm leaning toward this http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=498162 |
| I've had decent luck with the Winchester Xpert white box stuff at Wal Mart, it's $12.86 locally and I pick up a box every time I'm there. Works well on the local ground hog population. Accuracy is around 1.5-2" at 50 yards with a red dot on Savage MKII bolt gun. |

Last year I filled an ammo can with that 36gr Federal (I think it held 6500 rounds) and gave it to my brother for Christmas. (I don't think he's fired a round of it though; just threw a dessiccant in there and stashed it)
Myself, I've always been partial to CCI mini-mags, even though they cost more. Last night I had a few drinks, took a deep breath, and ordered this.

| Wal-mart has Federal brand bulk packs that your looking for except it's in 550 round packs for $13.47. Way cheaper than midwayusa and you won't have to pay shipping costs. Also recommend Federal 510 .22lr ammo it's comes in the baby blue box at Wal-mart for $1.47 for 50 or $14.70 if they have a ten pack of 500 rounds. It's lead tip but alot of people like it. |

I, most certainly, would not recommend bulk pack ammo from wally world. This is the lowest quality stuff to come off the line, hence the price, and you are gambling.
The last time I bought in bulk, I Federal 510 Blue Box. Excellent reliablity, but not very good accuracy out of my 597. Rule of thumb: If the rounds aren't packed 50/box, 10 box/carton - don't rely on it. I had to throw away half my last bulk pack because they wouldn't fire. How much money did I save? What do I like? For hunting, I've had good reliability and accuracy from Winchester Super X, Wolf Match, and Remington/Eley. Find out what ammo goes well with your weapons, and then buy it in bulk. Going cheap usually doesn't end up very cheap. |
| I've gotta' be honest, the Fed bulk packs from walmart have never failed me. They are even the 2nd (to Wolf MT) most accurate round in my 10/22. They cycle all my 22's, always feed well, rarely FTF, and stay sub-sonic in my P22. They have quite a few positive attributes for me. What about they makes you think they won't last if stored for a few years? |
| I buy one of the Fed. bulk packs at wal mart almost every time I go in. They run great in my 597 and model 60. I'll also be using then in my P22 once I finish off this last box of Mini-Mags to break it in. I have way less crap rounds with the Fed. than with the golden bullets, and they're also much more accurate for me. |

In my Ruger 10/22 Target (race rifle), Remington Golden Bullet is hands down the best I've tried yet. More consistent then the two different "target" ammunitions I've tried in it (Remington Targets and CCI Targets), and MUCH cheaper.
In my Walther P22, Winchester SuperX feeds and shoots the best. STan |

I shoot
Beretta 92G with a factory .22 kit Browning Buckmark (2) Ruger 10/22 AR-15 with Ceiner conversion kit All my .22 rifles and pistols love the Federal bulk pack. As for the quality, they go bang 99% of the time. I mostly shoot the .22 conversion kit on my AR using Blackdog 30 round mags and they're very reliable. I may get 1 fail-to-fire out of 200 rounds at the worst. I've had pretty good results with Remington Gold, except on the .22 kit in the AR. All my other guns like it, but since I like my .22 conversion so much, I no longer shoot the Remington. They were failing to feed and getting deformed on such failures. Also, I noticed a higher rate of fail-to-fire with Remington compared to Federal. Winchester X-pert 22 is the dirtiest among the 3 bulk packs I've tried and they're also not plated so I stay away from it. I've never had failure with CCI Minimags but that's not bulk ammo .

cmp sells aguilla a little over 200 for 5000 rounds How does it shoot? Anything but a 9 is my fault, while with Wolf MT anything but a 10 is my fault with the tiny 50ft targets Not a Dynapoint fan, and the yellow Aguila SE boxes are a good option to the now mia Fed 714 for me. My casual league ammo now. |

I would HIGHLY suggest buying a box and giving it a test to make sure that you and your rifle like that Federal before you buy 5000 rounds. Just a suggestion... I'm just saying, it's a lot of money to spend. Of course, it is Federal, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Bulk ammo is a hit or miss gamble.
My 10/22 shoots the smallest, most consistent groups with Remington Golden Bullets. (50yd targets) Federal 550 Bulkpak and Winchester Xpert are usually were pretty much even , but still runner-ups. Eley...same performance as the Rem GB Federal Target....meh Winchester 333 was a waste of money...buckshot patterns At 100yd ranges, CCI Velocitor wins out. HOWEVER...the last box of Winchester Xpert I got from Wallymart was a MAJOR disappointment.Every round has been FTE....I'm talking stuck case that had to be manually dug out of the chamber. Maybe this was just a bad run of ammo, either way it has tainted my desire to buy more. I guess .22lr is like cars , don't buy one made on Mondays or Fridays. |

Had the same exact problems last weekend with that same ammo. Was shooting a S&W 22A and a Glock with an Advantage Arms kit on it. I wouldn't take any more Winchester bulk .22lr ammo even if it was free. |

Not a fair comparison as Midway and Wideners are both out of stock but I would check both when they get some in. I Agree with others that the fed bulk is ok for blasting and shooting with the kids but when you sit down to shoot groups with your 10/22 Target gun you will be disappointed. I have had decent results with CCI Standard but there are no deals to be had . Last time I bought a case at Wholesale Hunter I have been happy with my results with several of the ammo variety's offered by Aguilla Aim Surpluss had some,The Armory and at one time CMP had the best deal on two different standard velocity types |

I'm stocking up on Fed. 550's from WW,,Load 750 . They work in everything I have .
I talked to the local WW salesman about quntity prices , he said no discounts . So at $13.48 per 550 x 10= $134.8 not really a 5K case but 5500rds for less than 140 and NO shipping costs rocklock |
