i took it in trade it came with a dot sight i broke it down to check out the trigger system
as the trigger is heavy and has alot of creep in it ,  but i think i can do a trigger job that will help it out alot it's similar to a ak trigger and i have done afew  of those triggers to reduce them down to 4 lbs. .
i mounted a scope today and shot it @100 using 60 grn Vmaxs it went 2 1/2 for groups but i had to work hard on the trigger to pull through the shot .  anyway i will post some pics of what i have now and where iam taking it

im going to do some milling on the aluminum upper and it will be a cross between these two.

this is how it ended up slotted the rail

milled the slots in the body

milled the original scope rail and mounted it under for a forward grip mounted a 6x9 bipod

made a sling and moved it up to leftside like i do all of my rifle

made my own charging handle

all i need to do is paint and go shoot the thing

Keep us updated on this, it's pretty interesting. Can you tell me more about the charging handle you made?

sure the charging handle was the easest to make no milling at all . i drawed out what i wanted on the 1/2 inch flat stock 6061 , i then drilled the contour  out the handle by using a 1 inch bimetal hole saw bit then on the vertical bandsaw i cut it out and sanded it down on my belt sander in the in these two pics that posted below is how it was at first in my photo's above you can see where i rounded the right corner off and removed about 1/8 on the back of the charging handle you will also see that i made a slot cut on the leftside of the charging handle so it could slide into and on top of the original charging handle and retained the original charging handle i liked the way it set in the slot on the top of the receiver and if i removed it and just used the new aluminum charging handle then i would of had to mill a 1/8 in slot around the bottom of the charging handle so it would of went into the slot of the top pf the receiver , you can also see how i trimmed the original down in the above photo's compared to the two that i post here . if you have a M17 i would highly recommend you make a new style of charging handle like one of mine you can charge the rifle so easy and fast , i also put a couple of bad rounds in the chamber that i know would not  chamber  so i could slam the but on the ground while i was pressing down on the handle same way with a AR and it threw the two bad rounds right out on the ground easy a pie
have any more questions just ley me know , im going to do a cammo tiger stripe paint job on this one .

cleaner .

i will post some more on the Bushmaster , remember i traded for this , shot it about 12 times @ 100 with the scope that i had on it and then tore it apart to do my mods , today i spent the morning sighting in the red dot that i put on it right before i did the cammo paint job , today i tried out several of my mags only to find out that half of my mags were pretty loose in the mag well , making the front of the mag droop down in the front causing a failure to feed where the bolt would come forward and catch the new round right about in the middle of the case putting a dent in the case and a stoppage of the bolt in the middle of the charging cycle or it would catch  the live round and push it straight forward and push it into the bottom of the feed ramp and stop the bolt  ,either the bushmaster has had a shit load of rounds and mag changes  fired though it to wear down the magwell to open it  up and wear it  out of specs. to me this is not a problem just a opportunity,   ok so i made a couple of plastic sleeves that would fit into the rear of the mag well into the slot for the mag , but when i dropped a mag out hard the sleeve would come out with the mag and fall out so i decided that i would drill and tap out the back of the mag well and put in a plastic screw to adjust the amount of free play in the mag well i couldnt find a plastic screw i have them some where either in the basement work area or out in my shop anyway i used a  allen head metal screw to
take out the play and it works great , after this mod i ran  six mags through this thing by hand and it cycled every round with out any FTF , i did go ahead and burn 28 rounds as fast as it would cycle with no problems as well .
i will either make a plastic screw or pick one up at a hardware store this week , the tap size is 6/32 if anyone else has this problem , you could  go 8/32 but the 6/32 should handle this fine .

the other mod i did on ther bushmaster was to install the electric wire heat wrap on the trigger rod what this did was take up the pull by removing almost the entire first stage of the trigger pull on the trigger , this made a huge improvement on the trigger , i still will be doing a complete trigger job where i will try some AR springs in the trigger and do a alittle metal removal and polishing out the hammer on the trigger .

M17's are some of the most perfectly balanced rifles I've ever held. Should have bought one when they were only $600 bucks and still being made....Same regret applies to the SL8

You can still find them on GB once in a while for $600.  I just bought one and do custom mods on them.  I have done several since KKF left us.
Here is a mod that I do.

You did a sweet job on that build. I like the paint job.
Looks like you used the same rail I'm going to use on mine, I'm still trying to decide what sights to use but it's mainly going to be used with a scope.

OH, What scope mount did you use in the earlier pics? I like the looks of that.

not a machinist just a ole boy who is learning on a couple of  3 in 1 machines
i will be upgrading as my hobby funds permit to a engine lathe and a bridgeport anyway  i use a
HF 5980 & a Grizzly G9729 i bought the 5980 off of craigs list and kinda got the machine bug
so i bought the Grizzly from their showroom . ive done bolt carrier weights ,  muzzle brakes , threaded a couple of barrels , turned a few tactical bolt handles and turned down the bolt handles and threaded them  for remingtons.
made several of my own jigs so it's nice to out to my little shop and make chips .

the scope mount is a Burris 30mm in the upper pic ,

the rail is from EGW
EGW 16 in. Picatinny Scope Mount Extrusion Rail

i can do another rail for you send me a email and we can go from there on prices for service as i wont list no price on here  for any work wanted , i would rather have your upper  so i could drill /tap and mount the rail like i did mine , if you just want a rail slottled and you drill and mount i can do that to .
thanks for the replies on this project .
