I saw last months articlein the "Shotgun News" on the "improved" CETME from Century Arms, they fixed the crappy stampings and shoddy workmanship and have re-released this gun, or so they said, so I decided to give it a try. I paid about 310.00 for one shipped including FFL fee's. It arrived without any sort of manual and no 5 round mag in a really crappy box, it was full of some sort of oily valve grinding compound they use to lap it together but otherwise exterior fit and finish was nice and the wood looked good as well. The barrel has rifling and is lightly pitted from front to back,,I thought it was a rather sh!tty bbl. It cleaned it completely using my copy of "Small Arms of the World" as a manual and reassembled it and today I took 8 magazines and went to the range, we are 100 yard limited in the rain. It fired every single time,, no jams, no malfunctions of any kind and only one dud round, it threw brass 30-40 feet to the right front, just like an HK-91. The trigger is a gritty two-stage 8 pound thing that could benefit from a little polishing. The comp is a little miserable for folks on either side of you but pleasant to shoot behind. Accuracy was cruddy, I admit I was shooting Southern Ammo's cheap dented ball, but even that averages 3" in my 1919a4, with this gun it did maybe 6" or so at a hundred yards, with a few moments of decent accuracy. The stock is a little hard on your face during recoil but otherwise it pointed and shoot fine. Overall, This is an early variation of the HK91 and behaves in a similar fashion. It is about as accurate as an inexpensive battle rifle can be but it's fun to shoot. I like the look of it as well and 20 mags are dirt cheap. I think this was as good as a 300 dollar rifle can do, I'd have liked a nicer bbl and smoother trigger but for the price it is fine and it is a blaster anyway. I got 20 mags from TAPCO for around 90 dollars shipped so I am set for life on mags. I have heard these are hit and miss on quality but the last few NEW ones I have seen are in pretty decent shape, I'd have to say its worth a look. |

I polished the trigger on one for a friend of mine and it breaks alot cleaner now. Its still a battle rifle trigger though, just alot smoother. Just so you know it can be done easily. IMHO the biggest problem with these guns is the sights. Alot of guys are scoping these guns because the sights don't adjust very far at all, maybe 4-6 MOA windage and that's it! Not good, even for a battle rifle. |
