What can I expect if I get a Collector grade M1 from the CMP. I am looking for something to restore to original condition. I think a collector grade has all matching parts, correct? Also, how hard would it be to find a new, correct USGI stock for this gun, if the stock I get is not original and/or beat up? I don't care if it is a WWII or Korean war Garand, I just want an M1 as it rolled off the assembly line in as issued condition. Anything else I need to know? Scott |
If you are looking for something to restore, I would suggest a Service grade and send it off to have it reparked, or as I am planning, a Greek rack grade. I intend to have it rebarreled to 7.62, new stock from Wenig, and complete repark. Total cost for a pretty much brand new Garand, $800-900, much less than Springfield Armory. |
I know a service grade is much cheaper but they don't have all matching parts. I need all matching parts if I want to do a complete restore. Also, who is doing your repark and how much are they charging? |
Probably Tim Strait(I hope) will be doing the repark. I shudder to think of the vile names you will be called for refinishing a collector grade, but I understand completely.

I may or may not repark. Just depends on the condition of the metal. If I can get a repark like the original finish with the original formula, that would be great. Scott |
| The looks of the current Greek return collector grades from the CMP look just about new. I really don't think there would be anything else you would need to do to them. I've seen pics of some really nice ones on the Garand section of the Jouster.com board. |

If you want one which looks pretty and you're not concerned with resale - you should restock / refinish. If you are interested in a rifle which will retain / grow in value over time, I'd reconsider. As with most things collectable - any modifications / improvements will seriously decrease both the collectibility and the value. I'm getting a service grade. Should be fun. |

Just got back from the CMP north store and saw two greek collector grades that had a TE of 0 and MW of .50 or in other words they were like new. I had to hadle one for a while and really look at it cause it was as close to being brand new as anyone will ever see. The rifles were SA high S/N post war with proper stocks that were pristine and the proper cartouches. They are packed heavy in cosmo unlike the SG ior RG's. Have fun....go North and hand pick your very own. I ended up with a SG that should have been a collector grade....all parts are original 1955 SA. including the stock. |
